www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 22, 2007 - 11 Schizophrenia Society moves Halton office to Oakville By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER T he Halton and Peel chapter of the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (SSO) recently moved its offices from Milton to Oakville. "Oakville is a more central location for both regions," said Lisa Crowley, Regional Coordinator for the Halton and Peel chapter of the SSO at a recent open house for the new Oakville location. "It's also larger than our previous office, which will allow us to build upon our staff by hiring on two more people." The Halton and Peel SSO office is located at 136 Cross Ave., and serves the Halton population of Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Acton, and Peel region of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. More space and staff were necessary to meet the demands of the population booms in both regions. An estimated 10,000 people in Halton and Peel could be affected by schizophrenia. For those afflicted with the disease and their family and friends, receiving the necessary amount of support in order to treat and cope with it can be difficult. Through this need arose the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario (SSO), a province-wide organization founded in 1979 by Oakville resident, the late Bill Jeffries, which is dedicated to providing support and increasing awareness of the disease. The SSO works to provide people affected by schizophrenia with the resources and support needed to manage the disease. It also hosts public forums and support groups, advocates for better legislation and services for those effected by the disease and promotes research real and what is not. There is no cure for the disease, but medication and therapy can help to manage it. Schizophrenia is usually diagnosed after the individual has had at least one psychotic episode. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, the better the treatment outcome will be. One of the goals of the SSO is to help educate the public about the realities of schizophrenia. Through its work, the SSO aims to reduce and eliminate the stigma that surrounds the disease. "We are here to support family and friends who have loved ones with the disease," said Crowley "There is still a lot of stigma surrounding the disease." Schizophrenia usually manifests when a person is in their late teens or early twenties. Symptoms of the disease include depression, anxiety, difficulty thinking and concentrating and having trouble distinguishing between what is The simple truth is that all mutual funds carry fees and that it severely affects investment performance. These fees include MER's (management expense ratio), which is an annual fee that's charged to a mutual fund to pay for management, advisor sales commissions, legal fees, marketing expenses and so on. These fees average about 2.53% for equity funds, but often exceed 3%. Not much you say, but consider that this represents a whopping 30% of the average gain you're likely to receive in any year. MER's combined with other fees to cover trading costs (yes you pay for this) and taxes on distributions (not just when you decide to sell, but each year interest or dividends are paid) may erode returns by as much as 5% a year. This is 50% of the average return provided by the equity market, which hardly seems like a good investment. We think not. Jonathan Chevreau, related a story in the financial Post last year: `An advisor recently told me of a multimillion dollar portfolio he took over. The previous "advisor" put this client into 80 different funds, all of them high-MER funds sold with a DSC (deferred sales charge). The investor paid more than $50,000 a year in fees and didn't even realize it until the new advisor wised him up. After all, with "embedded compensation," the fund companies never actually send a bill!'
