Golfers aim to put shelter on the map After 13 years and more than $110,000 raised, long-time Oakville resident Brian Turnbull is heading off the links -- at least as organizer of the annual Turnbull Aquarium Golf Tournament in support of Halton Women's Place. Turnbull, who took on the fundraiser as a retirement project, is hoping someone else will pick up the cause. Over the last 13 years, Halton Women's Place, which is the region's shelter for battered women, has received a donation of more than $110,000 thanks to the charity golf tournament. The tourney, held in July at its usual venue, Deerfield Golf Club, raised more than $15,000 this year. In its first year, it raised $650. By 2005, it raised more than $18,000. Turnbull said the tournament, held every year at Deerfield, which is located at 2363 North Service Rd., turns over every penny raised to the shelter.
