www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 25, 2007 - 11 West Nile virus invading north Halton The first West Nile virus (WNv) infected mosquitoes in Halton this year have been found in Milton and Halton Hills. The mosquitoes were trapped in the area of Main Street and Ontario Street South in Milton and the Maple Avenue and Main Street South area of Georgetown last week. Also last week in Milton, a crow found in the same area tested positive for the disease. That was the first bird in the region found to have the virus this year. "We are increasing our surveillance to keep track of West Nile virus activity in the region," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton's medical officer of health. "We are in the peak risk period for human infection. Residents should continue to ensure their personal protection through the end of September." Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile virus to humans after becoming infected by feeding on the blood of birds carrying the virus. So far, there have been no human cases of West Nile virus in Ontario this season. "It is still too early to say whether this year will be milder (risk of human infection) than previous years or not, therefore Halton residents should make personal protection against mosquito bites a priority," added Dr. Monir Taha, Halton's associate medical officer of health. The following are steps residents can take to protect themselves and their families from mosquitoes: · Cover up. Wear lightcoloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants with tightly-woven fabric. · Avoid being outdoors from the early evening to morning. This is when mosquitoes are most active and likely to bite, as well as at any time in shady, wooded areas. · Reduce mosquito breeding sites around your home by getting rid of all waterfilled containers and objects. Change the water in bird baths and empty rain barrels at least once a week. · Remove old tires and turn over pails, toys, and wheelbarrows. · Keep eavestroughs clear. · Use an approved insect repellent, such as one containing DEET. Maps showing the locations of positive birds, as well as standing water sites that have had larvicide applied are available on the health department's website at www.halton.ca/wnv. To report a dead bird or standing water, call Halton Region at 1-866-4-Halton (1866-442-5866) TTY 905-8279833. A common concern heard among people who care for a loved one whose health is in decline, is that they are torn between the feelings of deeply caring for someone else, and the need to have some time to care for their own personal needs. The emotional involvement as well as the physical exhaustion can be overwhelming. Recognizing this need, Links2Care is now providing a Respite Program. Focused on providing helpful support to the caregiver, the program allows someone to select the amount of time they need to relax, refresh or recapture some of their activities, while a trained respite worker attends to their loved one. The respite workers are well-trained, screened, reliable, and the cost is very reasonable beginning at $8.00 per hour. Links2Care provides this program throughout the communities of Halton. A few hours a week of care for the caregiver can make a remarkable difference in the lives and relationships of many families and couples. For information or inquiries please call.....
