www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 29, 2007 - 5 Crash claims life on QEW By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are blaming a lane change for yesterday's collision on Hwy. 403 that left one man dead and a woman with serious injuries. At about 7:30 a.m., police say a silver Honda Accord was travelling along the QEW towards Toronto when it made an "ill advised" lane change and struck another vehicle. Although this collision was characterized as minor, the Honda lost control and shot through a ditch that separates the QEW from Hwy. 403, near the Ford Plant, where it was broadsided by a GM Cargo van travelling up the ramp to the 403. The female driver of the Honda was airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto with serious head injuries, no longer considered life threatening. A male passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the two other vehicles involved in the crash were not injured, despite the fact the GM Cargo van rolled over into a ditch. The crash resulted in the closing of the eastbound lane of QEW for approximately 10 minutes, while the ramps to Hwy. 403 and Ford Drive were closed for four hours. "This has not been a good summer for the OPP. We've had about 300 people killed," said Sergeant Cam Woolley, OPP Highway Safety Division, who also pointed out that the long weekend is only expected to add to the problem. ON THE SCENE: Police investigated a fatal crash on the QEW yesterday. this weekend and the QEW and Oakville will be playing a big part in this in two ways. First, with the good weather people are still visiting places like Niagara Falls, but there will also be a lot of people coming back early to get ready for school so the shopping areas along the QEW are going to be busy as well all weekend." Extra OPP officers and Ministry of Transport crews are being placed on the roads in anticipation of this build up with the OPP focusing strongly on aggressive driving, impaired driving and seatbelts. "In about a week the people in the Oakville area should be prepared for a lot worse traffic. Everyone is heading back to school and work. We're really expecting a sort of shock of traffic on Tuesday," said Woolley. "I've been doing this for 29 years and the first week is usually pretty bad because people aren't expecting it."
