4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 31, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Beware suspicious mail If you think it's a bomb, don't move it. That's the message the Halton Police Explosive Disposal Unit is spreading to the public in the wake of an attempted letter bomb last week. On Aug. 24, police say a man tried to light a package containing a firework before putting it in the post box of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness on Lakeshore Road. The package, which also contained Jehovah Witness magazines, did not catch fire. There was no damage to the box. Police say the suspect caught on video is white with dark hair, a medium build and wearing dark jeans, a T-shirt and white running shoes. He was seen fleeing the area in a silver vehicle, possibly a Volkswagen Golf. Letter bombs in Oakville and other jurisdictions have heightened concern people have when they receive unexpected packages. In July, Halton Regional Police issued Heat Alert issued as Labour Day nears As a result of hot temperatures, a humidex advisory was issued by Environment Canada Wednesday. When that happens, Halton's Health Department issues a heat alert. In response, the Town of Oakville is urging its residents to take the necessary precautions to limit outdoor activity and keep cool. "Residents are urged to take advantage of Oakville's air-conditioned community centres, seniors' centres, library branches and Town Hall, or take a dip at one of our indoor or outdoor pools and splash pads," said Nina deVaal, Director of Recreation and Culture. For hours and locations of the local facilities, visit www.oakville.ca. During heat alerts and warm weather, the following is recommended: · Drink lots of water (avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages). · Check regularly on children, neighbours, the elderly, persons with disabilities and chronic illnesses. · Stay in an air-conditioned place (if possible) and only go outdoors during the coolest part of the day. · Limit outdoor exercise. · Avoid the sun by wearing loose-fitting clothing, hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. Parents with children attending Town-run summer day camp programs are reminded to pack extra drinks and to freeze drinks the night before if possible. It is also a good idea to pack a change of clothes and towel daily, as campers will get wet most days. He brought the suspected bomb to the police station, fearing for the safety of himself and those around him. Earlier this week, a Burlington man brought a letter with a bulge in it to the Burlington Police Station, but officers examined it and it turned out to be a reed for a musical instrument a friend had sent. On Wednesday, a Georgetown woman went to the police station with a suspi- cious box that turned out to be a tea pot. Police say that while none of these incidents turned out to be an explosive device, "the recipients all believed it possible." That's why they're telling the public that if anyone receives a suspicious package, do not move it. Call the police and report it immediately. Explosive Disposal Officers are trained experts and can properly examine these packages. Moving the package yourself only increases the risk to you and others.
