But it's virtually impossible to recapture the dance of exotic flavours that tickled the tastebuds on such sojourns. Those who have enjoyed the gastronomic treasures of Mediterranean countries and those who would like to flock to Agabi Mediterranean Restaurant. The culinary talents of Essam Farag conjure such tasty memories and longing for Egypt, Lebanon and Greece. This is because the menu items at the 134 Lakeshore Road West restaurant (at Kerr Street) are the stuff of Farag's life growing up in Alexandria, Egypt. He moved to Canada in 1992 with more than 10 years experience working as a chef under his belt. Six years ago, Farag opened Agabi (translated it means `love') Mediterranean Restaurant to share his love of creating the authentic tastes of Egyptian, Lebanese, Greek and French food. He makes it all the only way he knows how to: with fresh ingredients, all from scratch. He intentionally put the kitchen within the sightlines of the lunch, dinner and takeout crowd, "like an open market" so that people can see for themselves that everything is made on site, said Farag. (Catering is also available on or off the premises.) The most popularly requested item on the Agabi menu is Shawarma (which means turning). Marinated chicken is slowly roasted on a vertical rotisserie, thinly sliced, lightly grilled and layered in a pita. A favourite dish for Farag is anything with seafood such as calamari or octopus. In the restaurant's six-year history other menu favourites have emerged such as taboule, a crushed wheat salad with finely chopped fresh parsley, tomato, green onion, lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil, as well as Farag's ingeniously daily-prepared soups and the restaurant's equally delicious souvlakis and braised lamb shank. Prepare hearty and healthy lunches With a little planning, school and work lunches can be healthy and nutritious to keep you and your family going throughout the day. "Making healthy choices doesn't mean you have to give up your favourite foods," says Patti Payne, senior advisor of prevention at the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division. "The key to eating well and maintaining a healthy weight is to focus on what adds value to your meals, not what you take away." Research shows that 30 to 35 per cent of all cancers can be prevented by eating well, being active and staying at a healthy body weight.
