16 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 5, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Barbour of England Walking for Grace The third annual Walk for Grace, a former Oakville girl who died last year of a brain tumor, will be held Sunday at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The walk, originally held to raise funds for Grace's treatment, will now benefit the Grace Compagnon Stanley Tribute Fund and funds raised will be directed to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children research institute. Grace Compagnon Stanley was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in October 2005 at 20 months of age. Prior to this diagnosis, which was the result of a mild focal seizure, Grace was the product of a healthy pregnancy and hit all of her developmental milestones early. Neither of her parents had any history of brain cancer in their family and were shocked to learn their only child had a malignant tumor the size of an orange in her brain. Grace endured more than a dozen surgeries, eight months of the strongest chemotherapy available for a child her age and a bone marrow transplant. All of it was not enough. Grace earned her angel wings on Sept. 6, 2006. The third annual Walk for Grace will be held on the weekend representing the first anniversary of Grace's death. The previous two years had consisted of a 32-km walk representing 1 km for every week of her treatment. This year a 31-km walk will begin at 8 a.m., representing one kilometre for every month of her life. In an attempt to increase participation, this year a 5 km adult walk has been added (at 1:45 p.m.) and a 1-km children's walk (beginning at 1 p.m.) to the venue. The walk will take place in Bronte Creek Provincial Park and include children's activities sponsored by Gymboree Play and music as well as a Harvey's barbecue lunch for each participant.
