The Oakville resident's photographs of Mayan architectural sites he captured while traveling in Mexico are featured in two group exhibitions in Mississauga ­ currently at Gallery Streetsville until Sept. 30, and at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre from Sept. 1­Nov. 4. The long-time professional photographer and graduate of York University's Fine Arts program describes his latest exhibited works as "a documentary-style approach." "I was interested in Mayan society after reading Jared Diamond's book, Collapse, and some other books on Mayan history. The way Mayan society was set up, there were factors involved in the collapse," Teteruck explained. "The society went through a sort of catastrophic collapse, and the factors that were involved in that, one could draw some parallels to the way modern society is running now." Over-population, war, destruction of the environment ­ these are just some of the similarities that exist between the ancient civilization and the society we live in today. "Mayan society resources were put towards aggrandizing the kings and the elite, and so they would deplete a lot of their resources," Teteruck said.
