www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 5, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Roadside relief for dog days August is over and once again we've experienced Mother Nature turning up her thermostat. August is often referred to as the month of "dog days." Like me, you may think this expression originated because dogs become lazy during the hot days of late summer. But the phrase actually refers to Sirius, the Dog Star. The "dog days" of August are the days when Sirius rises and sets at about the same time as the sun. This summer has been hot for all of us, including our furry canine friends. They feel the heat, particularly during their daily walks, and usually come home with long, parched tongues. But thanks to a thoughtful person in Bronte, our doggy friends have been well taken care of this summer, with a convenient water stop to quench their thirst. When I walk along Spencer Road with our golden retriever Maggie, she almost sprints when she sees a bowl of water at the roadside just a short distance away. With her tongue hanging out and panting frantically, she takes a nosedive into the welcoming cool water. After a long slurp, she looks Thank You MOLLY MAID! The water bowl is also tempting for some of our two-legged friends. When my husband is out jogging, he often casts his eyes towards that very same bowl with thoughts of quenching his thirst. He's usually about ready to get down on all fours at that point in his jog, but he resists the temptation! With global warming continuing to provide us with the challenge of keeping cool, it's good to see that a thoughtful neighbour is playing their part. So on behalf of Maggie and her furry friends in our neighbourhood, we say "Thank You" to our `cool' benefactor you have allowed many a thirsty dog to continue for one more `lap'. Now that we know what to expect during the "dog days" of summer, it will be interesting to see what our thoughtful neighbour places at the end of their driveway during the "snow days" of January maybe a hot toddy for us dedicated dog walkers!
