www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 7, 2007 - 15 My magical mystery tour By Alan Davenport, Grade 12 T.A. BLAKELOCK HIGH SCHOOL Crime Prevention Starts in the Neighbourhood www.oakvilleneighbourhoodwatch.ca www.shaferauction.com T he first day of my Magical Mystery Tour was a rainy one. It was July 6, and I had endured a sevenhour flight from Pearson Airport to Manchester, England. I arrived around 11 a.m., and was met by my uncle Bill (my dad's brother). I was there last summer with my whole family, this time it was only me. I have been saving up for ages for this trip; it was one of those things that I just had to do. We got to my uncle's house where I have always enjoyed visiting. He showed me where I was sleeping; it was in the attic. It was different from last year though, it had been transformed into a very nice bedroom. My uncle is a DIY (Do It Yourself) enthusiast and right after unpacking, we went off to Ikea to get furniture for another room he was redecorating. Over the next few days I toured around the city. I went to the Trafford Centre, one of the main shopping centres in all of Manchester. I also went to Manchester International Airport three times, it was really enjoyable. I took some brilliant photos of planes. The airport has its own viewing park, nothing you would find in Canada. I went there at three different times of the day, getting pictures of all kind of airplanes in rain and sun. The first of my magical experiences was when we went to the glorious Manchester United grounds of Old Trafford. My dad had attended a business conference a month before I arrived and had won a £50 gift voucher for the Manchester United mega store. I had spent around £48 and they told me that they do not give back change on vouchers, so I ran around looking and got a few pencils and a medallion and ended up spending more than £50 by about $1. My uncle is a music fan, a great pop music enthusiast, and during my visit he took my aunt and I to see Bryan Adams in concert in Liverpool. I liked it very much and now have much more respect for Bryan Adams; it was a great performance. It was my second visit to Liverpool that was really magical. A fan of pop music, my uncle is a Beatles fanatic. This new visit was about going into Liverpool to `experience' The Beatles. My uncle planned for us to go on a bus tour of every Beatles landmark. We got there and found the tour had been sold out, but the tour operator told us about a taxi company that visits every place on the tour, and is much more personal. It was a great experience. We saw Eleanor Rigby's grave, the childhood house of each member of the Beatles, Penny Lane, and many other places. We also had photographs taken in front of the gates at Strawberry Fields, and even wrote our names on the gate. We met the caretaker of the church where the Quarrymen performed and John met Paul for the first time. That magical meeting was on July 6, 1957. That was half a century ago. My uncle said that he felt shivers down his back. Our magical mystery tour ended in Matthew Street, downtown Liverpool, where the famous Cavern pub is located. Now I'm back at school after a summer of great memories and experiences, but still thinking about that Liverpool magic.
