That Tiger Woods, Mike Weir, Vijay Singh and other PGA greats might be playing here isn't just good news for golf fans. Wednesday's announcement by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) that the Abbey was given the nod to host the 2009 tournament means an economic impact of between $15-16 million over the six-day tournament. That's a "conservative" estimation, says Mayor Rob Burton. "This is classic destination tourism. It should generate 120,000 visitors over the course of the event. That's bound to be good for the businesses in Oakville that can cater to tourism." The Abbey was already set to host the 2008 tournament, which means that over 12 days in July of 2008 and 2009, between $30-32 million will be rolling into Oakville. These numbers are based on a formula established by the Province that takes into account the number of visitors an event draws and its impact on tourism, says Cathie Best, interim CEO of the Oakville Economic Development Alliance (OEDA). "In terms of the revenue to the existing business, it's a wonderful thing of course, because the spin-off is on tourism dollars," Best said. "This brings in overnight accommodation, it brings in individuals who are shopping, who are looking for food, restaurants, service industry, it brings in tax dollars for the municipality."
