A tri-athlete who was in the best shape of her life, Barber had received a clean bill of health when she had a physical in January. Not long after, she discovered a lump in her underarm, but waited as a routine mammogram was booked for March and pointed out the lump to the technician. "That was the defining moment," said Barber. The next day a battery of tests were booked -- CT, bone and liver scans, an MRI, ultrasound and x-rays, followed by a biopsy. On April 24 she was told she needed surgery and on April 27 she had it. After surgery, she needed weeks of rehab to regain use of her arm. The transition from caregiver to patient was the most difficult of her life, admits Barber, who worked 12 years as a front-line paramedic in Peel/York before taking on administrative roles that landed her with the Ministry of Health prior to joining Halton Region EMS in 2000. Two weeks after her surgery, Barber faced the daunting challenge of unpacking in her new home, but friends and family helped her set up her new place. Then she began chemotherapy in June. "I have one more treatment left, Sept. 26 ...whew hoo," said Barber who notes she is undergoing the standard treatment regime that will see chemotherapy followed by radiation and then a year of hormone treatment. Within two weeks of beginning chemotherapy, Barber's long, shoulderlength-plus hair had fallen out. Many of her friends have gone the same route to show their support. Her eight nieces and nephews, aged two to 15, have provided her with a Top Ten List of why it's great to be bald. Besides the savings on hair care products, Barber said one nephew said you can go to bed with bubble gum and not wake up with it in your hair. Barber said she can be ready to go out in 10 minutes. It's not the first time McNicol has experienced having no hair either.
