www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 12, 2007 - 19 Overwhelmed by support Continued from page 18 Oakville Trafalgar High School, had her head shaved previously to donate her hair for wigs for cancer patients. This time around, McNicol left with her five shorn ponytails destined for the Hair for Kids program. "I talk about my situation, I share it and I keep a positive attitude and my family, friends and workmates have been a tremendous support in keeping me positive," said Barber. Barber uses the word "overwhelmed," her gaze becoming distant as she searches for words to convey how much the support has meant to her. Issuing a big "thank you" to her employer Halton Region, Barber said her employer has put her first through her challenge. "Sometimes you do lots of thinking and reflecting on life," said Barber, comparing her illness vis-a-vis her past experiences visiting impoverished nations to volunteer where there is no healthcare, and noting it has validated her belief that Canadians are the "best fed, best med" nation. Besides tri-athlete competitions, Barber has always participated in the annual Terry Fox Run and will do so again this year with her nieces and nephews. Taking part in other fundraisers like Friday's event is not about her, but about helping others. While waiting for chemotherapy treatments in the Chemo Lab at York Central Hospital, Barber talks to others who are nervous or new to the experience. "It helps me become the caregiver again," she said. While Barber said it's not worth having cancer to experience, she said, "A lot of positive things have come out of this experience that I will cherish the rest of my life." "I know I'm going to beat this, I had early detection," she said, adding, "So 2007 has been a very lucky year all around because it has afforded me the opportunity to truly reflect on all the blessings I have with my family and friends and work and living in Canada," she said.
