4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Tory slams McGuinty's record of broken promises Continued from page 1 "There are many other broken promises that have been left in the wake of Mr. McGuinty's government, but today is the day I believe he did more than simply break a promise. Today is the day I believe he broke faith with the people of Ontario." The opposition leader went on to point out that breaking promises like this has had very real consequences to Canadian politics by increasing the level "It's disturbing when people think your word doesn't matter anymore. When they think that the notion of having trust in our leaders doesn't matter." John Tory Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Leader of cynicism towards it. people feel "It's disturbing when people think your word doesn't matter anymore. When they think that the notion of having trust in our leaders doesn't matter. When they perhaps don't understand that the credibility of a leader is founded first on trust," said Tory. The consequences of what breaking political promises can mean to the health of the people of Ontario was another topic Tory touched on. He noted that by not closing KEEPING SENIORS INFORMED Our LivingWell Events are Open to the Public TM Writing Contest for Teens 2007 September 4th October 26th, 2007 Enter the library's third annual Write2Xpress Contest for Teens! Ontario's coal plants as promised McGuinty may have helped to actually kill people. "Mr. McGuinty once stood and publicly proclaimed that dirty air from the coal plants contributed to 1,800 deaths a year. He then proceeded to do nothing about this problem over four years," said Tory. "By Dalton McGuinty's own estimation, the pollution from these plants has been a major factor in 7,200 people losing their lives in the past four years. A staggering, very real consequence of a broken promise." Tory noted that McGuinty's broken promises have had economic consequences as businesses see the government as inconsistent and unreliable and as a result choose elsewhere to invest and bring jobs. Tory noted that nowhere were McGuinty's business-frightening actions clearer than during the opening of Ontario's first diamond mine. "The international company DeBeers was setting up that mine. They were investing in the province of Ontario, particularly in the north, $4 billion. This included hundreds of jobs for Aboriginal people," said Tory. "The people behind that mine said they came here because Mr. McGuinty promised a favourable, predictable investment climate with mining rates among the lowest in the country." Tory says things went downhill after McGuinty traveled to the north for a photo opportunity at the mine's opening ceremony. "What did he do in his first budget weeks after that photo opportunity? He more than doubled the taxes on those diamond mines, threatening the future of an entire industry just as it was getting off the ground," said Tory. "The people from that company said, `This might not only be the first diamond mine in Ontario, it might be the last.' What kind of signal does that send?" Despite all the pounding on McGuinty, Tory did take the time to point out what he would do if elected premier. He defended his plan to publicly fund faith-based schools, which has been attacked by the Liberals as something that would drain half a billion dollars from the existing public school system. "I understand that our commitment to expand public education is not universally popular, but for me it is a matter of inclusiveness." John Tory Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Leader "I understand that our commitment to expand public education is not universally popular, but for me it is a matter of inclusiveness. I do not believe in institutionalizing a system that excludes 53,000 students from the benefits of public education on the basis of faith," said Tory. "I want those kids inside public education where we know the education they receive will be one entirely consistent with the standards we expect for every other student." Finally, Tory pointed to local candidates, Rick Byers, Ted Chudleigh and Joyce Savoline as the people who can turn Ontario politics around in the Halton Region. "They stand for more than photo ops and political gimmicks," said Tory. "They stand for results. They stand for accountability. They stand for doing what you say you will do. They stand for real leadership here in Oakville, Burlington and throughout the Halton Region." TOONIE TUESDAY! THE BEST BINGO VALUE AROUND!
