Taking Steps toward a cure On Sunday, Nov. 5, the Oakville community will take another big step towards finding a cure for breast cancer at the 2007 Canadian Cancer Society Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer at Oakville Place Shopping Mall. It's a leisurely, 5km, non-competitive, fundraising walk (plus a 1km Family Fun Walk), which takes place during the fall in communities across Ontario. Since Oakville Place hosts it, participants don't have to worry about the weather. The event launches at 7:30 a.m. from Centre Court. It begins with registration and a light breakfast for participants courtesy of Tim Hortons. Participants will also have the chance to enjoy face painting by Sheridan College students and a warm up by Jazzercise. Opening ceremonies will be hosted by Wave 94.7 FM and include a survivor recognition ceremony to honour those who have faced and overcome breast cancer. At 9 a.m., participants will lace up their sneakers and take to the indoor track, which is equivalent to walking 15 times around one level of the mall. A 1km Family Fun Walk follows. Oakville's own The Last Minute Band will provide entertainment. For information and to preregister as a participant and/or survivor, visit www.cancer.ca and follow the Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer links or call the Oakville Unit at 905-845-5231. Participants can register individually or as teams. Oakville Unit volunteers will also be at Oakville Place Oct. 13 and 20 to register participants. There is a $10 registration fee for participants 12 years of age and older. Children aged 14 and younger who raise $35 or more will receive a prize. Adults who raise $100 or more will receive an official Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer water bottle. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer made its debut in Oakville last November. It exceeded all expectations with 242 participants and more than $23,000 raised for breast cancer research. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer in Oakville also saw huge support from the local high schools in the event's first official High School Challenge. Students were asked to battle it out to see which school could raise the most money for the cause. It was T.A. Blakelock that took the 2006 title, raising more than $1,800. 905-257-3297 201 Oak Walk Drive, Oakville (Dundas &Trafalgar - the Clinic is inside the Real Canadian Superstore) Rain or shine Dedicated to Children's Health, Safety & Environmental Awareness Sponsored by: The Alliance Healthcare Team and World Children's Wellness Foundation Saturday, September 22nd 11:30 am - 3pm Alliance Healthcare, 232 South Service Rd.
