www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 15, 2007 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 2-4 211 GATWICK Bathtub race was positive experience for students Continued from page 6 The only answer I could supply them with is the one I was provided with; that it was cancelled due to injuries and liability. Are there no modifications that can be made so that the race can continue to operate? Running a race alongside a bathtub can't possibly be any more dangerous than many of the other sports teenage high school students engage in. Even shortening the race or having all runners wear protective equipment, such as knee and elbow pads, could help to decrease any injuries. Besides the occasional minor injury, it hasn't seemed in the last several years that safety has been an issue. All runners have had to wear helmets, gloves, and proper running attire, while St. John's Ambulance workers stood nearby. If the race must be eliminated entirely, instead the event could be modified to involve each high school competing for the most creatively decorated bathtub, which would still encourage spirit. Although I'm in my fifth and final year at St. Thomas Aquinas, and this September's race would have been my last, I'm saddened by the fact that our new Grade 9 and future students may never be able to experience what I was fortunate enough to be involved in. The bathtub races created a positive atmosphere with so much energy and enthusiasm, that the entire town of Oakville could be a part of. I speak on behalf of not only my school, but also every other high school in Oakville, as well as everyone who's attended a bathtub race in the last 43 years, when I say that if the bathtub race has been permanently cancelled, it will be greatly missed.
