YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES Ages 5-17 $290 Oct 27-Apr 26 Jennifer and Roy came to Canada from the UK in 1970 with their 3 children, and have always been active. They returned to Oakville from Vancouver in 2001 and when they went looking for an exercise facility 2 years ago their evaluation led them to the Y. They liked the equipment and found that the Y staff were helpful. Wellness coach Bill Joyce set up programs for the couple, and had to consider their specific health concerns. Roy's knees were giving him trouble, and he could not walk as he wanted to. Bill helped him to build his strength and prepare for two knee replacements in 2007. "I only stopped working out for about 6 weeks," said Roy. "It was good to come back because it really did help. I used the elliptical machine which does not stress my joints, and I would recommend to anyone to get back in and build your strength." Jennifer was diagnosed 12 months ago as `pre-diabetic'. Her medical review revealed that her diet was fine, but she had to keep her blood sugar down. Jennifer and Roy decided to improve their fitness levels by increasing the number of cardio workouts from 3 to 6 days each week a big commitment, but one that they felt would make a difference for their health. "We're retired morning people", says Jennifer. "We're awake anyway, so we come in before breakfast. The nice thing about coming in early is that the rest of the day is yours. And we feel so much better after we've been to the Y." Jennifer's YMCA routine includes the treadmill, the WAVE cardio machine and the ellip- tical machine, as well as the strength training machines. She does weight training three days out of 6. Roy uses the ellipse or the stationary bicycle for his cardio workout, and weight trains on the same schedule. The rest of the day is a full one for these grandparents of 5 children. When they aren't spending time with their family or friends, you can find them reading, on the computer, gar- dening or working in the house. Never ones to sit around, that pattern has not changed, and Roy said, "I am surprised that I found time to work." And what do Roy and Jennifer say about the fresh young faces that they see at the YMCA of Oakville? "Children keep you young." A good thing to remember! Thanks for being part of the Y family Roy and Jennifer!
