While quantities last. Sorry, no rain checks. Would MMP mean we'd have minority governments forever? Lately we have seen minority governments constantly on the brink of falling because Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition parties see it as their job to block their proposals at every turn. Individual MP's cannot vote their conscience, for fear of contributing to the defeat of their own party. Ontarians want a government that represents all our voices, with members who work together to solve problems, resolve issues and design legislation. MMP would provide this. In a new way of doing business, our representatives would have to talk and listen to each other, make deals and modify their goals- and every one of them would be accountable for the outcome. Would Ontario be stepping out into the unknown? Rather, we'd be stepping into the 21st century. Most countries in the world now use some form of Proportional Representation. Of the major democracies, only the USA, India and England retain FPTP (and England uses PR in European Union elections). Women, at least half the voting population, get better representation in governments with Proportional Representation systems. If we don't vote directly for list candidates, won't the parties use lists to foist all the usual old fogies on us? When forming MMP lists, parties consult widely and democratically (much more so than riding associations currently do when nominating candidates). List candidates will be published in advance and closely scrutinized. Achieving a good balance of regions and demographics is critical for a party's ability to compete for votes. It would be political suicide to nominate party hacks. List candidates would represent the local region, focus on particular issues and help out wherever they are needed. The present First Past The Post (FPTP) system was established in 1792. Most things in Ontario have evolved since then and Proportional Representation is now what we need. It's high time for a change. On Oct. 10, help to shape history and vote for MMP.
