26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 28, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Why voters should reject MMP electoral system Continued from page 17 only to those who put them on the list. More power to parties means less power to voters. More MPPs means more cost to taxpayers (at least $10 million more by my estimate). If you think accountability is important, say no thanks to MMP. 2) Stability. MMP is designed to produce minority governments and force the formation of coalitions. While we have suffered minority governments from time to time, MMP means permanent minority government and more frequent elections. It leads to the breakdown of "big tent" par- ties and the spawning of smaller parties, focused on single issues, religious affiliations, or extremist positions. We can expect lengthy back-room negotiations and hard-nosed bartering in the formation of coalition governments (just think about Belgium). Often, a splinter party that holds the balance of power can extract significant concessions. This leads to increased uncertainty. Most of us don't want government in our face all the time; let them do a decent job for four years and leave us alone. If you think stability is important, say no thanks to MMP. 3) Complexity. This is a complex system. You have to vote twice on one ballot. To vote with some comfort, you will need to consult each party's list of 39 "List Candidates," most of them unknown to you. The final determination of the makeup of the legislature depends on mathematical formulas and not just total votes. And, there are elements of this proposal that are either confusing or not yet determined. If you think electoral complexity is a problem, say no thanks to MMP. That's three critical issues. Each of us must do our best to understand MMP and decide whether it is right for Ontario. This much is clear. MMP will lead to less accountability, less stability, and more complexity. It should be rejected. Furthermore, not all of the MMP puzzle has yet been revealed. Don't vote for something you don't understand. You could regret it forever. Let's focus on improving and making better use of what we have had for hundreds of years. Reject radical change. Just say no thanks to MMP.
