"This is the most colourful character I've ever taken on from a wardrobe perspective, definitely," he said, smiling. "Totally ripped jeans, the biggest pair of cowboy boots you've ever seen ­ they're like canoes. The most eccentric shirts and tops and necklaces and earrings. Crushed velvet jackets, it's amazing." Warnock, a father of two who has been acting for more than 20 years, actually got his start thanks to Oakville's Mayor, Rob Burton, who founded YTV. "He cast me in my first role when I was a kid, and the year I moved here, I find out he's running for mayor," said Warnock. "When he was campaigning to be the mayor, it then hit me who he was. I couldn't believe it." Burton cast Warnock on a show called Turkey Television, and later, on You Can't Do That On Television. Those were his first two roles in a long string of success on the screen, though none of the characters have been anything like Paegan Smith. It was Warnock's idea to base Smith on Billy Idol and Leonard Cohen ­ "quite a dichotomy," he admits. "There's obviously a wild side to him, but there's also a Cohen side. He's really into herbal teas. He does a lot of meditating, a lot of yoga." Smith has been through various record labels, and just as many wives over the course of his career as a rocker. He's one of several characters on Instant Star, which airs in 150 countries. The show follows a young girl named Jude, who hits sudden fame and is thrust into the world of rock and roll. Smith was introduced in season three of the show, which recently wrapped up on CTV. "When you first see him, he's wearing a skirt thing, doing yoga in a wife-beater (tank-top) and mascara and other makeup," Warnock said. "Every morning, I wake up trying to scoop stuff out of my eyes, just to get to set so they can put it back on." At the end of season three, Smith and Jamie, of G-Major Studio, where much of Instant Star takes place, decide to bond together and begin their own production company. Smith is the financial backer of the company they call Nana's Basement Records ­ because it starts up in the basement of Jamie's nana's house. Smith is now Jamie's lone client. "They go against the grain of the corporate giant companies," said Warnock. "For some reason, we're in Nana's basement, but we have quite a few million bucks." Heading into season four of Instant Star, Smith has a few singles coming out, which Warnock will actually be singing. "The character had to get to the point where he's burnt out, washed out, and now he's back again at touring status," said Warnock. "Season four is going to be very exciting for Paegan. There's a few stunts in there for Paegan, which were extremely painful for me." Not wanting to give away the upcoming season, Warnock says, "All I'll say is I broke a few ribs on a roof."
