Oakville manufacturer fined $50,000 for workplace accident A European-based manufacturer of prosthetic human body parts was fined $50,000 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Milton, Oct. 1, after an incident at its Oakville plant crushed the fingers of an employee on Feb. 9, 2005. Imposing a fine of $50,000 on Otto Bock Health Care Canada Ltd., Judge Richard LeDressay heard that a worker's fingers on one hand had become trapped in the rollers of a silicone rubber mill - a machine used to knead blocks of licone to produce sheets that are used in the production of prosthetic body parts. Court heard that the employer failed to ensure the machinery was equipped with a proper guarding device. Otto Bock pleaded guilty to failing, as an employer, to ensure that measures and procedures prescribed by Section 25 of Ontario Regulation 851 were carried out at a workplace located at 2897 Brighton Rd., Oakville, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. In addition, the court imposed a 25per-cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime. Adam's birthday benefits food bank Instead of asking his friends for presents for his seventh birthday party, Adam Nasser Rinaldi asked them to make a donation to the FareShare Food Bank. Adam came up with the idea after he saw a homeless man on the news holding a sign that said `Need Food.' He started asking questions and told his mom he wanted to help. On his party invitations, Adam wrote "No gifts, thank you!" and at the bottom added "Please consider bringing a can or box of food or coins for the FareShare Food Bank." "We were expecting maybe one or two cans per child and a few dollars in loose change," said his mother, Pia. Instead, the 21 children who attended Adam's party brought 305 non-perishable food items, in addition to cash donations. As of Friday, the Fareshare Food Bank's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is running several thousand pounds of food donations short. Throughout the drive, which continues to Sunday, Oct. 14, nonperishable food items can be dropped off at the food bank -- 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6 -- between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Saturday; at all Oakville fire stations; in all local supermarkets in bins provided by Fareshare and in the paper food drive bags being handed out at the Real Canadian Superstore.
