www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 6, 2007 - 5 Why I should be the next Halton MPP In our final question for the provincial election, we asked the candidates why they should be elected Halton's MPP. Andrew Chlobowski Pat Heroux Green Party NDP I watch the greening of the platforms of the other parties with very mixed feelings. On one hand I am happy that ideas about sustainable economy or about prevenAndrew Chlobowski tion of the pollution of our air and water are coming into the mainstream. On the other hand I have nagging doubts about the honesty of such statements coming from the parties that for decades were deaf to these issues. Global warming did not happen last Monday. So, are the policy makers of those parties sudden converts like Saint Paul on his way to Damascus or is this a group of Great Pretenders? It seems to me that what they offer is yet another two-for-one special. We are the sustainable friends of the environment, who will save you from the crisis if it comes they say but we will keep the system as it is, no real change necessary. Ted Chudleigh PC Twelve years ago I ran for office because I was appalled at the state to which Ontario had sunk. There were no job prospects for youth, our economy was ruined, and the government of the Ted Chudleigh day had no idea how to turn the ship of state around. Remarkably, despite all our gains, history appears to be repeating itself. Manufacturing jobs are disappearing, high taxes and aging infrastructure are exposing the cracks in our economy, and the McGuinty Liberal government preaches sunshine and lollipops while they practice two-tiered justice, and inaction on important files like energy, air pollution and violent crime. I should be elected in Halton because I have a record of moving the ball down field on a wide range of files that are important in Halton: environment and land use, infrastructure and hospitals, fairness in grants, and keeping taxes down. Gary Zemlak Liberals I have lived in Halton for over 15 years and have become personally involved in the issues facing our growing region. I am committed to making Halton a better place to live. For over 27 years, I Gary Zemlak have operated my own small business providing assistive devices to persons with disabilities. Throughout my career, I have been assisting my clients lead more independent lives. Now, I want to take that experience to open doors for all residents of Halton. Only Ontario Liberals can keep Halton moving forward, by continuing to improve the public services and infrastructure that hard-working families depend on. In four short years we have been moving forward. Halton has 343 more teachers and we've doubled the number of classes in the early grades with 20 students or less. Halton Healthcare has provided 12,207 more procedures in five key areas and we I should be elected as Halton's MPP, because as a retired health care worker union activist, and an activist in our community, I know first hand the issues facing hard working families of Pat Heroux Halton. The NDP party is the only party that is standing up for hard working people. You can count on Howard Hampton and I am proud to be part of his team. I understand working people because I am from a working family. The NDP has six practical and doable commitments you can count on, a health tax rebate of $450 per person; an immediate increase to a $10 minimum wage now; affordable college and universities; high quality public education; reduced hospital wait times and improved health care; guaranteed 3.5 hours personal care in longterm care homes; and protection of our children's health and environment.
