The subject property is located on the south west corner of Maple Grove Drive and Lakeshore Road East in Oakville and is legally described as Part Lot 6, Concession 4, South of Dundas Street. Specifically, the wall and main entrance gates spanning the north boundary of the property adjacent to Lakeshore Road East are of cultural heritage value and interest. The property known as "Edgemere" dates back to the turn of the century, and its cultural heritage value lies in the survival of the prominent wall and main entrance gates visible to the public from Lakeshore Road. These features constitute an important part of the streetscape as they define and maintain the character of the area symbolizing the life and times of the era in which they were created. "Edgemere" meaning the waters edge, was the name given by its owner namely, James Ryrie, a famous Toronto jeweller who commissioned Edmund Burke and John Horwood to design the property in the early 1900's as they were then considered "Society's Architects of Choice" for turning out lavish mansions in the latest trends. Edgemere served as Ryrie's country home and later as residence to many established families in Oakville. The subject features of interest then, contribute to the understanding of the development of Lakeshore Road and Oakville more generally. The highly visible wall and gate serve as a unique example of a construction method which displays a high degree of craftsmanship and is representative of an early style. The main entrance is an English style timber gate constructed of wooden pegs, and includes a brass "Edgemere" plaque as it originally existed. The property wall has a rubble stone foundation and is crowned with cut stone and at regular intervals its length is interrupted by rubble stone pillars with cut stone caps. These are all key attributes that embody heritage value. Any objection to this designation must be filed within 30 days of October 12, 2007 being the date of publication of the notice of intention to designate. Objections should be directed to Vicki Tytaneck, Acting Town Clerk, P.O. Box 310, 1225 Trafalgar Road, Oakville, ON L6J 5A6 no later than November 12, 2007. Any inquiries may be directed to Zubeda Poonja, Heritage Planner for the Planning Services Department at 905-845-6601, extension 3171 or email at zpoonja@oakville.ca.
