For some people in Halton, though, it's a time of worry because they are at risk of losing, or are without life's basic needs food, clothing and shelter. Home Suite Hope, a local charity creating innovative solutions to local homelessness, is working hard to put an end to those worries. "There are not enough words for me to tell you what Home Suite Hope has meant to me. I came with broken wings, and now I can fly," shares one of their clients in a heartwarming thank you letter. Seventeen clients have passed through their doors over the past three years, and 13 are now living independently in the community. Perkins adds, "We don't just provide a roof over their heads. We also focus on life skills development, educational and skills training, job search assisNancy Brown, Halton Family Services executive director. Home Suite Hope has been providing outreach services to families in need for the past year, and is excited to be able to open a new home for these clients. According to Halton Region, almost 1,800 households are waiting for government assisted housing, and on average, they can wait almost three years. One way to help is to come to the Empty Bowls Help for Halton's Homeless event. Presented by Lockwood Chrysler, and held at Appleby College, Empty Bowls will take place on Sunday, October 21, 2007 from 1 4 p.m. It is an open house format, so people can come and go at their leisure. At the end of this month, their second home will open, providing shared living accommodations for homeless families with children. "The gap in serving homeless women and children is the highest need we have identified in our community," says Perkins. Their community partners agree.
