4- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 13, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Client list reads like a who's who in sports Continued from page 3 "The most rewarding part," he adds, "is working with athletes who are so motivated and at the top of their game. They're doing everything they can to get better." Galea, a father of six, who counts his proudest moment as watching his son stop a penalty shot in a big soccer game, doesn't spend all of his working hours at the Etobicoke centre. He visits Ohio once a week to take care of a few of the National Football League's Cleveland Browns, and as the Toronto Argonauts' team doctor, he attends every game. If that's not enough, Galea recently authored his first book. Dr. Galea's Secrets to Optimal Health, which covers everything from hormones, diet and aging to exercise, injuries and the spiritual side of sport. "To me, an athlete is not just about mental and physical," he said, sitting in his office, which is chock full of sports paraphernalia. "What makes a true athlete is the spiritual side. I think it's very important to open that up." At the clinic, Galea's client roster includes Canadian gymnasts, a long list of football players and several members of the National Hockey League, including Jason Spezza and Rick Nash, who were at the facility working in the weight room downstairs. The client list goes on. "I look after the top sprinters in the country," he said, after introducing one of the world's fastest men, a sprinter from the Cayman Islands, who was also at the center. Of course, Galea won't accept the credit for drawing these worldclass athletes to his facility. "Basically, I have a really great team that works with me," he said of the 35 other staff members at I.S.M. Health and Wellness. "I'm kind of like the quarterback. "We think outside the box. We have a great team, and we have a good track record of getting people back on track pretty quickly." Physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopaths, strength and conditioning coaches and more are on site. "He and his team here are the best there is out there," said Bentley, who has been a patient of Galea's through most of her career as an Ironman triathlete. "I've known Tony for a long time. He was the one who could get to the source of my injuries," she said. "There's no one better out there." Bentley was recently sidelined from triathlon training for twoand-a-half months after injuring her Achilles tendon. "He repaired the whole tendon," she said, by using a variety of rehab techniques, including the hyperbaric chamber. Typically, someone with that injury would not have been able to train and be ready in time for the Canadian Ironman. "I needed to rebuild that tendon," Galea explained. "I took her blood, and injected plasma around the tendon. Her own body makes it, so this way you can heal without using a drug, and there aren't any side effects." Getting Bentley back in time to be at the top of her game is among one of Galea's prouder moments as a doctor. "She wasn't going to run the Canadian Ironman because of the injury, but she was able to, and she won," he said, smiling. "That's a good one." There's nothing better than seeing an athlete he worked with like Bentley or Bailey return to their sport after an injury and put in a top performance. "I like when my guys win, not because I feel like I fixed them, it's more that I can allow them to do what they do naturally," Galea said. "I allow them to get back to that level where they excel. That's my job. "It's pretty good," he added, smiling. 2 LOCATIONS: St Cuthberts Anglican Church 1541 Oakhill Dr. (off Maple Grove) 6:00am, 9:30am, 6:00pm River Oaks Community Church 2435 Munn's Avenue East 6:00am, 7:15am CARPET · ORIENTAL RUGS · VINYL · HARDWOOD · CERAMICS · CARPET · C E R A M I C S · C A R P E T · O R I E N TA L R U G S · V I N Y L · H A R D W O O D · FALL CARPET REBATE SALE Thick Berber Sale Price $2.99/sq.ft.
