www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 13, 2007 - 5 Amica developer reaches amicable agreement with neighbours By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER H H H EMPTY BOWLS Developers take note: good community consultation looks like it truly can win the hearts of neighbours. Although the planning process has always mandated a certain degree of discussion with the community including a standard public information meeting typically residents aren't involved until developers have largely finalized their plans. In the case of a proposed Bronte development, however, local residents were recruited to help design a 143unit retirement home. As a result, the proposal has won the support of a number of local organizations and nearby neighbours. Amica (Oakville South) Inc. has applied to the town to build an eightstorey retirement home on the west side of Bronte Road, just north of Lakeshore Road. The proposed building will back onto Bronte Creek and occupy five lots that currently house several small businesses, a residential home and an old automobile repair shop. At a recent public hearing on the application, Brian Miller was among the community representatives offer- ing support for the application. Miller, president of the Bronte Village Residents Association (BVRA), sat on the six-member working group that helped design the Amica building. Also represented on the group were the Bronte Business Improvement Area (BIA), the Bronte District Advisory Committee, the Ennisclare Government Affairs Committee and the two churches near the proposed building site. Miller said he felt Amica offered the working group a genuine opportunity to help shape the development proposal. "I, for one, felt it was a very honest attempt on the part of the developer to work with the residents," he said. However, one BVRA board member opposes the development and is concerned that community organizations can be "co-opted" by participating in these types of working groups. "I believe they were used as pawns to achieve what Amica wanted 143 units in an eight-storey building," said Lorraine Quast. Miller disagrees with the assessment, and adds that the BVRA entered into the group with a degree of wariness. A fundraiser for: and help Halton's homeless.
