TALENT TO LOAN: Susan Dobson paints fence decorations as Appleby College staff and students loan their talents, and elbow grease, to assist Community Living Oakville. Appleby works hard at Community Living By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Teachers and staff at Appleby College even wash windows. They also plant, paint, pick up garbage and pull weeds. A total of 110 employees recently descended on Community Living Oakville's (CLO) headquarters and in just two hours reinvigorated its 10-year-old, overgrown garden, which is tucked in behind the Wyecroft Road building. They planted spring bulbs at the front, washed all the windows, and painted the lunchroom, foyer and basketball court. They painted a mural on the garden wall, decorated the fence with appliqués, sanded and stained picnic tables, built benches and planters, filled 25 refuse bags and made new friends in the process. They also covered all of the expenses of the $2,000 volunteer project. Not only is the newly revamped garden the envy of the neighbours in the industrial area, but it is a break-time respite for the 54 full and part-time employees who do custom packaging at the work site, as well as a play space for a new after-school care program for elementary students. "Staff are surprised at what was accomplished in just two hours," said Lesley Buckmaster, community service co-ordinator at Appleby. While the effort was a boon for the non-profit agency that simply doesn't have the resources to tackle such chores, it was an opportunity for Appleby to do some team building, said Andy Jelinek, See Everyone page 13 ADVERTISMENT Periowave ...A Gentle, Non-antibiotic Treatment for Gum Disease TM Do you visit your dentist for regularly scheduled checkups or wait until your symptoms force you to book an appointment? Scientific evidence is showing an important link between good oral health and general well-being. Researchers have identified certain oral bacteria that increase the risk factors for a host of much more serious systemic diseases. What is Gum Disease? The most common forms of periodontal or gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. These chronic, bacterial infections occur in the space between the gums and the teeth. Periodontal disease can be limited to one tooth or it can affect many teeth. As tiny pockets of infection form, your gums may become inflamed and bleed when you brush your teeth. As the infection breaks down your gum tissue, it can cause "attachment loss" where the bones that hold your teeth in place begin to break down causing them to loosen. These same bacteria are transported throughout the body by your blood stream where they can trigger much more serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers. To maintain good oral health, as well as your overall well-being, Dr. Joseph Andary, a dentist in Oakville, believes that early diagnosis and treatment are critical, as signs and symptoms are unnoticeable to the patient in the early stages of the disease process. New, Effective, Painless, Non-Antibiotic Treatment "In the past, surgery and/or antibiotics were necessary in the treatment of periodontal disease," says Dr. Andary. "But, surgery could be painful. And, in many cases, the use of systemic antibiotics, or locally applied antibiotics caused undesirable side effects leading to the formation of resistant strains of bacteria not only within the pocket itself, but throughout the entire body. "The introduction of Periowave solves most of these problems. Periowave uses a combination of a broad spectrum, photosensitive gel and a non-thermal laser. The gel is gently placed into the gum pocket where it binds specifically to the causative bacteria. Once the laser light is placed within the gel, the activation process destroys all of the bacteria within 60 seconds. There are no side effects or destruction of surrounding tissues. Only the harmful bacteria are eliminated." Dr. Andary has been using this new Canadian technology since its introduction over a year ago. He has seen consistently superior clinical results plus overwhelming patient acceptance and satisfaction with Periowave treatment. He adds, "More and more patients are concerned with their overall health. They worry about the use of antibiotics and the impact of gum disease on their general health. Those patients are choosing Periowave. Within days, they notice a difference in the health of their gums. More importantly, no followup is required. There are no drugs to take, no delay in eating or drinking and no discomfort related to the procedure." The Right Treatment for Me A Testimonial One of Dr. Andary's patients, Mr. Sid Johnson, age 63, was amazed with his Periowave treatment. He writes, "In the past I have had periodontal surgery along with numerous antibiotic prescriptions. I have also had antibiotics placed in my gum pockets. After Dr. Andary thoroughly explained to me the condition of my mouth, and outlined my various options, I proceeded with the Periowave treatment. The only thing that was expected of me to achieve optimum results was that I follow-up with effective routine hygiene procedures. I noticed within days that my gums stopped bleeding, and had started to firm up. They felt tighter around my teeth. From what I have read and seen I am also reducing my risk of heart attack and stroke. This is very important to me." Says Dr. Andary, " Periowave is a technology we have today that we wish we'd had 20 years ago. Not only are we saving more teeth but we are directly influencing and improving overall health." In Oakville Dr. Joseph Andary is proud to offer Periowave as part of a comprehensive gum (periodontal) treatment program.
