42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 19, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Interactive coffee tables of solid wood and glass with pieces that slide in and out of various positions Experience Belgian heaven at Leonidas Chocolates & Café Spring, summer, chocolate. November to April are otherwise known in the confection world as chocolate season, which makes the new arrival of a local Leonidas Chocolates & Café shop perfect timing. Guido De Meersman has brought a North American first to Dunn Street (just south of Lakeshore) with this, his fifth Leonidas location. As the name says, Guido has added an array of tastefully memorable beverages to the local haven of Belgian heaven. This is the first Leonidas on the continent to serve the sought-after specialty drinks that are popular throughout its European shops. The coffee and chocolate beverages are as artistically composed as the refined selection of cocoa creations behind the glass display cases. The 63-year-old chocolatier Guido has been in the delectable business of selling Belgium's finest chocolate for 40 years. This past week, proving new challenges are relished rather than avoided, Guido has been in training to learn how to operate the newly installed, Swiss-imported coffee, espresso and latte machines. The coffee is freshly brewed with each order, just like the chocolates, which are flown in fresh every week from Belgium and never frozen, unlike other high-priced brands. Guido hails from the very place the company was born, in Belgium. Two decades ago he came to Canada and has since set up Leonidas shops in Toronto, on Bloor and Queen streets, and in Newmarket and Highland Farms. As a special welcoming treat to Oakville residents, Guido is providing ample reason to justify a trip to the Dunn Street Leonidas. Until the end of the month fresh and beautifully pre-packed boxes are on sale. A 250-gram box that usually costs $19.50 is now $13.50; 500 grams, which usually cost $39, is now $27; a 750gram box is just $40.50, representing an $18 discount and a one-kilogram box that is typically $78 is $54. Or, select just some favourites and take 20 per cent off. Delivery is available. Leonidas is the namesake of the chocolatemaker's founder, Leonidas Kestekides who began his business nearly 100 years ago. Today there are 1,400 stores worldwide.
