Actually, volunteers have already begun distributing donation bags to Oakville homes -- and they'll be back on Saturday, Nov. 3 to pick them up -- hopefully full of non-perishable food donations. The Salvation Army relies on its annual food drive to stock its shelves for much of the year. Bag distribution began on Oct. 12 and Help needed to collect food donations will continue through next week to Oct. 27. Then, on Saturday, Nov. 3, volunteers will return to pick up donations left in the bags. "We would love to hear from anyone who could help out," said Bev Gardner, the Salvation Army Oakville community services co-ordinator. Volunteers to do bag drop offs are still welcome as some geographic areas in Oakville have not yet been covered, said Gardner. Others are needed to help collect the bags. Pick up will begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3 and those donating are encouraged to leave the donation bags either on their front door step or near the curb in plain view for collection. The annual food drive covers the entire town of Oakville. The Salvation Army food bank has existed for as long as the church has been in town and is available to everyone. No one is turned away, said Gardner. A visit to the Salvation Army food bank can result in picking up more than food, too, as the church is something of a clearing house for other community contacts that could offer assistance to those in need. Non-perishable donations that have not passed their expiry date are sought by the Salvation Army's food bank. Last year, the Salvation Army in Oakville assisted 2,000 adults including 1,143 families, 1,380 children and saw 140 new cases.
