Rinehart noted that here at home, the number of women in trades is almost as low as when she covered it decades ago, and that the number of women in engineering studies is declining, even at universities like Toronto where the dean is a woman. Rinehart said the education of girls can be sold to the masses on economic terms -- and maybe it's on those terms the necessity for it is finally being championed. Boys should be informed of the economic gains they'll realize should girls be educated. An educated woman can provide better care for her children -- the Oxfam statistic says that for every year a girl stays in school, the child mortality rate drops by 10 per cent. A 2001 study by the World Bank found, "There is no investment more effective for achieving development goals than educating girls." The study found countries where girls are educated have less government corruption, healthier populations, and faster growing economies than countries where girls are not educated. At the same time, the Canadian International Development Fund (CIDA) has made girls' education a primary goal. CIDA notes more than 100 million children of primary school age are not in school -- two thirds of them are girls. In addition, some 860 million adults, two thirds of them women, still cannot read or write. Statistics -- being used by global agencies -- are showing that educating girls leads to healthier populations, fastergrowing economies and less government corruption. Rinehart even linked educating girls as a weapon in the expensive fight against terrorism. She said women's rights -- and their sudden absence or disappearance -- have been a proven forerunner of despotic takeovers. It happened in Afghanistan when the Taliban moved in. It happened before that in Iran. Educating girls is seen to be one of the best defences in the war on HIV-AIDS. The disease is ravaging families and populations in places like sub-Sahara Africa, yet in those same places women do not have the right to ask, never mind demand, their mate use a condom. In the area where women do the lion's share of the crop production, increased education could lead to property ownership, which could lead to the ability to secure bank loans for business, which could lead to more political clout, and rights, and eliminate the condom debate. Give Girls a Chance operates under Tides Canada Foundation, which provides low-cost administration so that the charity is a non-salaried, all-volunteer organization. It supports education projects internationally in Zambia, Afghanistan, Tibet, Guatemala, Kenya, Pakistan and Ethiopia. At home it supports Literature for Life in Toronto, Artemis Place in Victoria, Children of the Earth High School in Winnipeg and the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation of Canada.
