www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 24, 2007 - 7 Leading scorer suffers broken vertebrae in neck Continued from page 1 Trinity Catholic Secondary School graduate had suffered a crack in his cervical vertebrae. "He had his head down and (Spade) came behind him and pushed him," said Blades trainer Bob Baird, who initially felt that Monardo might have simply suffered a "burner" (a common nerve injury resulting from trauma to the neck and shoulder). "Everything seemed to be fine up in the cervical area, but we had to be sure. We tried to keep him as comfortable as possible, and then the ambulance guys came and said 'C3-C4' (cervical vertebrae)." Spade was assessed with a major penalty and a game misconduct for hitting from behind. Referee Scott Brown called an end to the period with 1:23 remaining and the Red Wings went to their dressing room. Concerned Blades players and coaches remained on the ice or on the bench until Monardo was taken off the ice. "We have had a few injuries this year. You could see (Blades players') "As long as he has feeling in the rest of his body, the good news is that he's going to be okay in the long term." Blades head coach Carlo Coccimiglio faces and they were concerned," Oakville head coach Carlo Coccimiglio said. "They are all close friends. They grew up playing together, a lot of these players, and there was real concern on the bench." Coccimiglio said Monardo, who has eight goals and nine assists in 14 games, will be out for the rest of the season. According to Coccimiglio, doctors opted not to perform surgery on Monardo yesterday morning, deciding instead to let the injury heal naturally. "He has feeling throughout his entire body, just not the neck area," said Coccimiglio. "It's not near the nerves, I don't think, so I think at the end of the day he's going to be okay. "He's going to be missed. He is a big part of the team and was playing some excellent hockey the past several weeks," the coach continued. "As long as he has feeling in the rest of his body, the good news is that he's going be okay in the long term. The hockey side is one thing, his health is another. His health is more important at this time." The Blades, who led 2-0 at the time of the incident, won the game, 3-1. Monardo scored Oakville's first goal, 42 seconds into the contest.
