www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 27, 2007 - 11 Halloween safety tips Halloween is a traditionally happy time for children, but there are dangers. Halton Crime Stoppers is offering some advice to help make trick-ortreating trouble and crime free. Detective Gary Gold said it's important for everyone to help their children enjoy a safe Halloween. "People shouldn't think Halloween gives them a green light to commit acts of vandalism or other criminal acts," he said. "It's a time when everyone should be helping children to have fun and enjoy Halloween activities. "For younger children, it's important that adults be out with them as they go door to door getting candy from neighbours," said Gold. Even older children should not go out alone and are encouraged to use the buddy system. "Even after accompanying children, it's important for parents to check the candy before allowing their kids to eat it," he said. "Unfortunately there have been instances where treats have been tampered with." Parents should ensure costumes are flame resistant and fit well so children do not trip. Facial make-up or paint is also preferable to masks since they can obstruct vision while crossing streets or going up and down stairs. "It's important to stress to children that they should not go into a house or accept a ride from a stranger," Gold said. "They should also stay in well lighted areas." Homeowners should take time to check their property for anything that may be hazardous to trick-ortreaters, low tree limbs, hanging wires or unrolled garden hoses may pose a danger to young children rushing from house to house. Porch lights should also be turned on to welcome Halloween trick-or-treaters. "Everyone has a responsibility to guarantee Halloween is a safe and crime-free time," Gold said. He also stresses that if anyone has information about a crime, they should contact the police or call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1800-222-TIPS (8477).
