www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 2, 2007 - 41 Abbozzo hosts exhibition for well-known Canadian artist An exhibit of the recent works of renowned Canadian artist David Blackwood opens Saturday, Nov. 3 at Abbozzo Gallery. Widely regarded as one of Canada's most accomplished artists, the Blackwood exhibition will feature a new etching, other recent etchings, and related works such as drawings and watercolours. The new exhibition is being held in conjunction with the release of a new print from Blackwood's studio, which is located in Wesleyville, Newfoundland. Blackwood's depictions of the life, the landscape and the people of Newfoundland over the past four decades have contributed to a special body of Canadian work. His images have come to represent to many the essence of Newfoundland's traditional culture. Blackwood's art is part personal biography, part cultural document, part mythic narrative. His work is represented in numerous major public and corporate art collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada, the National Gallery of Australia, the Uffizi in Florence, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Blackwood founded the Erindale College Art Gallery at the University of Toronto, which was later renamed the Blackwood Gallery in his honour. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1993 for his contributions to the cultural life and heritage of Canada. In 2003, he received the Order of Ontario in recognition of his contributions as an artist, teacher and benefactor of the arts. Blackwood is also the recipient of two honourary doctorates. He will be in attendance for the opening reception of his show at Abbozzo Gallery on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 2 - 5 p.m. The exhibition continues until Nov. 25. Select works from the show may be viewed on the gallery website at www.abbozzogallery.com. Blackwood will also conduct an educational seminar on printmaking on Thursday, Nov. 8 in the gallery. Tickets cost $40 each and must be purchased in advance, as seating is limited. Abbozzo Gallery is located at 179 Lakeshore Rd. E. in Downtown Oakville. Call 905-844-4481 for further details.
