A day for heroes By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF INDOOR & OUTDOOR FITNESS TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING 1 hour a day / 3 or 5 days a week / 4 weeks The room was filled with Canadian heroes. More than 400 war veterans clad in medals and poppies were honoured yesterday at the 6th annual Veterans' Appreciation Luncheon at the Oakville Conference Centre. They came from all over Halton Region, from Caledonia, Toronto, Niagara, Beaverton and beyond. This year's celebration of Canada's heroes was the biggest ever. "It's really, really nice to be honoured like this," said 87-year-old Gordon Anderson, a Sgt. Major who served five and a half years during the second world war. "There's only a few of us left, so this is just fabulous," he said, smiling. "You feel so good about it, that's all," added Ed Thatcher, who enlisted in the army the year he turned 18, and served from 1942-1946. "It brings back constant memories, good ones and bad ones. When they play the last post, you think about all the people you knew." The trumpeting of the last post drew tears to the eyes of 86-year-old Margaret Ackroyd. She was clad in her uniform from 1946 and a name tag bearing her name and the words `living history.' "It was very emotional," she said. "This is just wonderful, for us to have such a do in a wonderful place. It brings back a lot of memories." Ackroyd used to perform comedy shows for the Canadian army, touring Canada, England, Scotland and Korea with her comedy troupe. Enlist today!
