www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 3, 2007 - 35 Forum looks at macular degeneration A free seminar on Macular Degeneration will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6. An eye physician and surgeon at Halton Healthcare Services will speak about the disease, early detection and treatment -- as well as take questions and answers. The event will be held at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Auditorium, 327 Reynolds St., with displays and refreshments from 6:30 p.m. and the seminar commencing at 7 p.m. Eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, are increasing as the population ages. The phenomenon is further aggravated by the rapidly increasing incidence of diabetes. The macula provides the central vision we need for reading, driving, and seeing fine details clearly. As its name implies, AMD is a chronic, age-related, degenerative disease of the macula. There are two types of AMD -dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD progresses quite slowly and painlessly while wet AMD is more aggressive and can strike with alarming speed. Both types damage the macula and can cause central vision loss and blindness. New medications have great promise in improving the quality of life for people living with this condition so there is currently a lot of research being done in this area. The trick is to catch and treat this disease before it causes irreversible damage and that's why regular eye exams are so vital. There may be no warning with many of these conditions until it is too late, so an annual routine eye exam with an eye doctor is crucial, so these conditions can be caught and treated before irreversible damage can occur.
