4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 9, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Saluting sacrifices brick by brick As president and director of the Juno Beach Centre, Burlington D-Day veteran Garth Webb has been an active promoter of projects to remember every Canadian soldier who sacrificed their life during the Second World War. To that end, Webb has been devoting his energy locally to promoting the Halton Juno Beach Memorial Brick Campaign, a project to raise awareness and funds to buy a memorial brick for each of the 264 Halton men and women killed serving Canada between 1939-45. The bricks -- actually plaques with the names of veterans inscribed on them -- are displayed on kiosks located on the grounds of the centre, which was opened on June 6, 2003 at Courseulles-sur-Mer, France. On the properties courtyard there are 17 kiosks containing some 11,000 bricks purchased by and for Canadian veterans. Webb's goal is to see the brick purchasing program expand across the country and ultimately result in a brick purchased for each of the more than 42,000 Canadians killed while serving in the Second World War. Webb also joined forces with Halton's public and Catholic school boards to produce a teaching unit. Remembrance Day parade and service In honour of Remembrance Day Sunday, Nov. 11, a parade will take place in downtown Oakville and culminate with a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in George's Square. The Oakville Legion, Branch 114 annual Remembrance Day Parade will form at 10:15 a.m. at corner of Church and Navy Streets, leave at 10:30 a.m. and march along Lakeshore Road, east to Trafalgar Road, north on Trafalgar to St. George's Square Cenotaph. A service will then take place at the Cenotaph at 11 a.m. In the parade, veterans will be joined by members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, Halton Regional Police, Oakville Fire Department, Knights of Columbus, cadets, scouts and guides and local dignitaries. The ceremony at 11 a.m. includes two minutes of silence and a special presentation of In Flanders Fields by the St. Andrew's Children's Choir.
