BAD KARMA: Graffiti mars the overpass near the intersection of Grenville and Glenashton Drive. Ready to eradicate graffiti By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF "Some of these pieces of graffiti are quite large and they'll take a Anyone who has looked out the few hours to clean up." Dan Cozzi, Town of Oakville window of a GO train or driven under an overpass would be hard pressed not to have noticed that local graffiti enthusiasts love to display their work, much to the chagrin of everyone else. Utilizing a wide variety of styles and methods the purpose behind graffiti can be many things, including one individual's simple desire to see their name displayed everywhere they go, a calling card of gangs used to lay claim to turf or an expression of hate for a race of people or the government or something else. Whatever its purpose the problem of graffiti has spread to Oakville and has reached a point where the Town has decided to take special action to deal with it. "We recently started a graffiti abatement strategy that involves us having a dedicated two person crew who actually deal with graffiti," said Dan Cozzi, Director of the Roads and Works Department for the Town of Oakville. This crew's sole duty, Cozzi says, is to eradicate graffiti from Town property, which they learn of through a graffiti tip line or find themselves. Once residents report the location of graffiti the crew tries to remove it within three business days, a schedule, Cozzi says, the crew has been pretty good about sticking to, although he acknowledges that it's not always possible. "Some of these pieces of graffiti are quite large and they'll take a few hours to clean up," said Cozzi. Priority is also given to graffiti that is racist or threatens a particular individual. In these cases the graffiti eradication crew tries to remove it immediately. Whatever type of graffiti is found, before power washing it off walls the crew responsible for the removal also photographs it to help police build evidence against those responsible. " If we see 20, 30, 40 tags, by photographing them and providing them to the police, if they ever catch the culprit at least they can identify how many times this person did it," said Cozzi.
