www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 10, 2007 - 11 Region launches new toilet rebate program Halton Region has launched a new pilot program that promotes water conservation and puts money back in residents' pockets. The initiative, called the 2007 Halton Residential Ultra Low Flow Toilet Rebate Pilot Program, offers a rebate to residents who purchase and install an approved water-efficient toilet in their home. Halton citizens who are on the municipal water supply can now apply for the rebate for one toilet per household. Based on the program funding, the Region is offering 700 rebates on a first-come, first-served basis. "Halton Region is promoting water conservation with the Halton Residential Ultra Low Flow Toilet Rebate Pilot Program and encouraging residents to be water-wise in the home," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "Water is a precious resource and we want everyone to participate in preserving it now and for future generations." Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette noted that the program is a great opportunity for the residents in his municipality -- which has wastewater limitations -- to conserve water. "As we saw this past summer with the hot and dry weather, the capacity of the water system in our area was under stress, so it is important that we all make an effort to help and reduce water usage in our homes," he said. In a typical home, toilet flushing can account for approximately 30 per cent of water usage. The installation of a high-efficiency toilet could save 28 litres of water per person per day based on the replacement of an older, inefficient 13-litre-per-flush toilet. Residents can apply for a rebate of $60 for toilets that use six litres of water per flush or $75 for high-efficiency or dual-flush toilets that use 4.8 litres per flush and either three litres or six litres per flush respectively. To receive the rebate, residents must complete and mail the Region an application form with the original sales receipt from this year for an approved toilet model. For more information and to obtain a copy of the application form visit www.halton.ca/toiletrebate or contact staff at 905-825-6000. Time for flu shot The Halton Region Health Department will be offering free flu immunization clinics to all Halton residents this month. Clinics will be held throughout the region at various schools and community centres, including the Halton Regional Centre at 1151 Bronte Rd. The complete clinic schedule can be viewed at www.halton.ca/flu. Annual immunization is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. Individuals of any age with certain medical problems or chronic illness, young children, all pregnant women and seniors are considered high priority for flu vaccination as they're at high risk for flu-related complications. Immunization is also important for those who may spread the flu to this high-risk group and for those who provide essential community services. For more information about the flu or the clinic schedule call 905-825-6000 or visit the aforementioned website.
