During the Tuesday evening gala at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto the TDL Group Corporation was recognized by the awards for its decision to use wood in its Tim Hortons stores where possible because it is an effective and cost efficient material. The TDL Group's citation notes that in 2006 and 2007, 30 per cent of their stores built in Ontario were wood frame construction. Designing and building with wood products, the citation continued, also allows for a much shorter construction cycle and as most products are inventoried and sourced locally, the need to pre-order building materials due to manufacturing lead times is eliminated. "The nominations all showcase wood and wood products. We are impressed each year by the innovative projects that are submitted. We see amazing new construction technology alongside equally impressive projects that feature traditional uses," said Marianne Berube, Ontario Executive Director, Wood Works.
