Quality of coaching, excellence of programs and contribution to gymnastics within the province and the country were factors in the selection of OGC as Gymnastics Ontario's Club of the Year. The award is the latest step in the odyssey of the OGC, a club that began modestly in 1975 at Montclair Public School. Currently, more than 5,000 local girls and boys, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, participate in a variety of recreational sessions, competitive programs and summer camps at the club's 25,000square-foot home in the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Much of the club's recent success can be attributed to the decision to hire a full-time chief operating officer nine years ago. Former national women's basketball team coach and Oakville Sports Hall of Fame member Wayne Hussey has since worked closely with the Town to develop the new gymnastics centre and to promote the sport within the community. The club has also attracted a number of well-known and respected gymnastics coaches to oversee its recreational and competitive programs. Included in that mix are three-time Canadian Gymnastics coach-of-theyear Kelly Manjak, the former longtime coach of Olympic gold medalist Kyle Shewfelt; former Olympian and national coach Lorne Bobkin; former national team athlete Erik Rafka; national tumbling team co-coach Nikki Lavoie; and ex-national power tumbling team coach Don Holmes. Other notable coaches include Laurie Chambers, Greg Jackson and Susan Manjak. The OGC has seen a 40 per cent increase in its competitive athlete numbers since 2005. The competitive program now has 180 athletes that represent the club in three disciplines: men's artistic, women's artistic, and power tumbling. This year, the club boasted seven national team members, including argo men's Canadian champion Cory Paterson. OGC hosts national and provincial training camps, and has been home to the provincial men's artistic, women's artistic, women's elite, and trampoline and tumbling championships.
