www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 14, 2007 - 5 Fourth Line bridge demolished As thin air is now the only thing above the QEW where the Fourth Line overpass used to be, it is obvious to all that the Saturday night demolition was a success. Ministry of Transportation officials reported no problems in collapsing the overpass with the QEW reopening to traffic at around 9:15 Sunday morning as scheduled. "We've done quite a number of these now and this one seemed to go just like clockwork," said Will MacKenzie, MTO spokesperson. The bridge demolition required the QEW to be closed from Third Line to Dorval Drive beginning Saturday night from 11:45 p.m. to 9:15 a.m. Despite the closing of such a major GTA artery, MacKenzie noted that the detours set up on the service roads kept traffic moving for the most part. As expected, backhoes with hoe ram (jackhammer) attachments were used to essentially chip away at the bridge until it collapsed. The QEW was not damaged when this happened as the ministry had thrown down several feet of sand for the road's protection. The old Fourth Line bridge was demolished to make way for a new bridge that will support an improved Fourth Line roadway with pedestrian and cycling facilities as well as additional lanes for traffic and transit.
