Autumn Invitational winners Most of the OAK competitive swimmers that did not attend the Harvest Invitational were instead competing at the Autumn Invitational that weekend, also in Little League participation continues to rise Participation in Oakville Little League baseball increased by 21 per cent this past season, the league announced recently. More than 1,030 players participated in the 2007 campaign, which featured more than 90 house league teams and six All-Star squads. "We're obviously very pleased with the participation numbers in our league," said Oakville Little League president John Sweeney. "It's not possible to pinpoint one or two reasons for the upsurge in participation, but it reflects the continued global trend Little League International has been experiencing in recent years. It is probably a combination of factors." Sweeney pointed to the league's emphasis on balancing recreation with competition, equal playing time, parity in house leagues, convenient game times and venues, and increased interest in the Little League World Series as possible reasons for the increase. "With our new Fieldhouse at our showcase diamonds on Cornwall Road, we will be able to continue expansion of our programs," he said. "We are looking at using our new facility to provide special events throughout the summer, such as baseball clinics and summer camps, house league and AllStar tournaments, and some family-oriented activities." More than 500 players have already signed up for the 2008 season. For more information on Oakville Little League or to register online for next year, visit www.oakvillelittleleague.com.
