18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 21, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Getting warm feeling from winter socks By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF I t would likely take less time for a monkey to don some socks than to make a monkey out of socks. However a visit to St. Jude's Anglican Church's Anglican Church Women's (ACW) annual Fall Fair bazaar Saturday, Nov. 24 will turn up brides, ballet dancers, rock stars, clowns -- all monkeys and all made of socks. Making a monkey or two out of socks is a relatively new hobby with which many of the congregation's female members have had great fun in anticipation of this year's fundraising fair. Nearly 100 of the creative critters will be available for sale at the annual fair, which runs 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church located at 160 William St. in downtown Oakville. "Our mission, if you may, is to hold events such as our fall fair to help us raise money, which we in turn use to support different outreach programs locally, across Canada and abroad," explained St. Jude's ACW member Ardyce Warren. "We have assisted a nurse in training to take a six-month journey to Africa to work with children RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER HOPING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Ardyce Warren, left, and Joan Connelly show off some of the sock monkeys that will be for sale at the St. Jude's Anglican Church's Fall Fair Saturday, Nov. 24. affected by AIDS. We've sent money to help rebuild a church that was damaged in a fire. We also contribute to our own church and community," said Warren. All women of the Anglican faith make up the ACW, but a small number gather once a month for a meeting and organize and run events like the fall fair. The ACW has a long history of fellowship, companionship and service to St. Jude's and the wider Oakville community. It comprises about 40 women who meet 10 times a year in the church's Library Hall. Any member of the church is welcome to join and the ACW hosts fundraising events, including its rummage sales and a fall fair. It aims to assist in the upkeep of the church's interior and to answer special appeals for assistance outside the parish. The ACW makes contributions as agreed upon by vote of the membership at a general meeting.
