Pictured here, Kristina Rajacic (left) of the Oakville Venom bantam girls' #2 team drives past York Avengers opponent Laura Kizovski during their tournament game Saturday at White Oaks Secondary School. The Venom #2 team lost 32-21 to Scarborough and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record. Scarborough won gold, KitchenerWaterloo took silver and York claimed bronze. MICHAEL IVANIN / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Shootout victories pad Blades' conference lead The Provincial Junior A Hockey League's West Conference leaders won two games last weekend in true Western style. Shootouts were needed to determine a victor in both of the Oakville Blades' recent games. Oakville defeated the Burlington Cougars 6-5 Friday in Burlington, then edged the Brampton Capitals 3-2 Saturday at Joshua's Creek Arenas, improving the Blades' record to 16-4-3. Defenceman Trevor Eckenswiller, who recently accepted a scholarship offer from the Rochester Institute of Technology, scored the shootout winner against Burlington. He also converted a shootout attempt against Brampton, with Geoff Guimond adding the decisive marker. Luke Moodie scored twice and Nick McParland, Guimond and Jonathan Cristini added singles during regulation time Friday for the Blades, who scored five consecutive goals to build a 5-1 lead. Burlington stormed back with four third-period goals, however, to force overtime. Julian Cimadamore had three assists, while Moodie and McParland also enjoyed three-point nights. Saturday, Steven Guzzo and McParland scored second-period markers to give Oakville a 2-0 lead. Brampton scored in the second period to narrow the lead to 2-1, then tied the game early in the third. Scott Greenham picked up the win in both games for Oakville. The Blades are scheduled to play three games this weekend. They will host the Milton IceHawks Friday, a 7:30 p.m. start at Joshua's Creek Arenas, before visiting Georgetown Saturday and Streetsville Sunday. Ice offense in deep freeze A lengthy layoff from league play appeared to affect the Oakville Jr. Ice in recent action. Playing its first Provincial Women's Hockey League contests in two weeks, the Ice was blanked in two straight home games. Oakville dropped a 2-0 decision to Cambridge Saturday, then fell 4-0 to Stoney Creek Monday. The Ice will return to league action this weekend with a pair of road games. Oakville (3-6-0) will visit Windsor Saturday and travel to London Sunday.
