www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 21, 2007 - 5 Ottawa bound to support civil liberties Continued from page 1 allowed to exercise their democratic rights. It's unbelievable that judges, lawyers, human rights activists and journalists get muscled in that country. We should take stand for the rights of people of Pakistan. That's the reason I decided to join the Canadian Bar Association's march," added Khan. CBA President Bernard Amyot will lead the procession of CBA bar leaders, lawyers, law students and other members of the legal community from across Canada. The County of Carleton Law Association is also giving its full support to the march. Bar leaders will address the marchers and participants will have the opportunity to sign a petition of support for Pakistan lawyers, judges and the rule of law. The Law Society of Upper Canada has also expressed grave concerns about the dismantling of the rule of law in Pakistan. The Law Society in its media release calls on the Pakistan authorities to: · immediately reinstate the Constitution of the Republic of Pakistan and put an end to the Proclamation of Emergency; · immediately release from detention and house arrest those detained after declaration of state of emergency; · respect the independence of the legal profession and the right of lawyers to exercise freedom of opinion and conscience and to exercise their legitimate professional duties as lawyers; · restore the independence of the judiciary by reinstating Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and other judicial officers displaced by recent events; · provide assurances the elections to take place in January will occur as planned, resulting in a full and democratic transition to civilian rule. Khan wants lawyers and other supporters in Oakville to join him in the journey to Ottawa to support democratic and civil liberties in Pakistan.
