www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 24, 2007 - 35 U18 Cubs start with silver Oakville's newest rep volleyball team got off to a great start in tournament action recently. The Sheridan Cubs Volleyball Club's (CVC) under-18 girls' squad reached the final of the Provincial Cup tournament at Sheridan College, where it fell 2-1 to Aurora Storm Typhoons. The Cubs won their pool and were undefeated going into the championship game. It was a promising beginning for a team that had never competed together before, representing a club that did not exist a month before the tournament. The CVC is founded by Carol Onate, who is also the head coach of the under18 team. Onate brings plenty of experience to the team, having coached numerous Burlington Blaze rep squads over the years as well as coaching at Nelson High School. She was recently named the assistant coach of the Sheridan College Bruins. Karry Brabenec assists Onate with the under-18s. Members of the team are Riley Ward, Meghan Shantz, Leah Franco, Ashley Nixon, Alex Galvin, Kaela Campbell, Kodi Veenstra, Alene Van Der Hoop and Erin Taylor. The CVC intends to participate in numerous Ontario Volleyball Association tournaments this season, culminating in the Canadian Open national championships next spring in Ottawa. Anyone interested in sponsoring the new club is invited to contact Carol Onate at cneonate@cogeco.ca for more information. Speedskaters win medals in Rochester, London Zachary Lin and Patrick Duffy each won gold, leading a fivemedal showing by Oakville Speed Skating Club members at the recent Rochester (N.Y.) Annual International Speed Skating Competition. Duffy's gold came in the challenging Open A division, against a number of skaters from the American national team. Graeme Tickner, Katie Quesnelle, Anaka Will-Dryden, Sheryl Sullivan and Erin Stewart added fourth-place finishes at the competition, which featured 28 local skaters in total. Taylor Amos and Michael Sullivan each broke the oneminute mark for the first time in the 500-metre distance, while Sean Stewart eclipsed a 50-second time. The Oakville Speed Skating Club also won seven medals at the Western Regional Ability Meet in London.
