www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 24, 2007 - 7 Kettle campaign challenge The Oakville Beaver is taking on the challenge to help the Oakville Salvation Army reach its Christmas Kettle Campaign this year. The Oakville Beaver editorial, photography and accounting departments have adopted the kettle at the Oakville Wal-Mart store, 234 Hays Blvd., on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The kettles, with which officials hope to raise $110,000 for the needy of the community, are being set up for a campaign that will run until Dec. 24. Last year, the Oakville Salvation Army fell short of its Kettle drive goal largely due to lack of volunteers. "After publishing the news about the Salvation Army's difficulties last year, we decided to lend an extra hand by volunteering this year," said Oakville Beaver managing editor Rod Jerred. Beaver staff will be accepting donations at the Salvation Army kettle at the Wal-Mart store from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 "We plan to be back again this year," said Jerred. "It's a good cause and our sign-up sheet was filled quickly, so we are challenging other departments at The Oakville Beaver to follow our lead. We are also challenging other businesses in town to adopt a kettle for a day to help make sure the Salvation Army reaches its goal this year." Individuals can also help out by volunteering for shifts. "Students are welcome to take part in this Christmas opportunity for which you will receive volunteer hours for school," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army spokesperson. Gardner notes that people can volunteer to help at the kettles any time between Monday and the end of the campaign on Dec. 24. How long people volunteer for is also negotiable, but most shifts only last for about three to four hours. Anyone interested in volunteering for the Christmas Kettle Campaign can call 905-847-7108 or 905-827-5324, ext. 22. Drop by Wednesday and visit the Beaver staff at the Oakville Wal-Mart kettle on Wednesday. Be sure to bring a donation.
