www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 28, 2007 - 41 Grace and elegance Blue Stars stun powerhouse, win Baltimore soccer tourney The highly-touted Montgomery Dragons might have viewed the Oakville Blue Stars as a speed bump at last weekend's Baltimore College Showcase. The Blue Stars, however, had other ideas. Oakville surprised the Dragons -- the fourth-ranked under18 boys' soccer team in the United States -- 2-1 in the opening game of the tournament, then rode that momentum to three more wins and the championship at the prestigious competition. "We were set up as cannon fodder in that first game," said Blue Stars head coach Phil Iafrati. "We weren't expecting to beat them, but we had a team meeting the night before. We told (the boys) Montgomery might be overconfident and that would be to our advantage. They probably would be looking past us." Evroy Jr. Ellis scored both Oakville goals and Rishawn Simpson drew an assist in the upset of the Maryland powerhouse. Andrew Pastoric, Tevin Wynter, Dominic Bell and Martin Walecki contributed strong defensive play. The Blue Stars then went on to blank Rochester (N.Y.) Futbol FC 3-0 and Pittsgrove (N.J.) FC 2-0 to reach the final, where they scored two second-half goals to down a tough McLean (Va.) Soccer FC squad, 3-2. Sandro Rajkovic, Roberto Spadafora and Ellis had the Oakville markers in the win over McLean, which had defeated the Virginia state champions in the semifinal round. "A great win for a great team," said Iafrati, adding that a number of Blue Stars players drew interest from university scouts attending the tournament. Evan James, Adrian Silzowski, Simpson, Spadafora and Ellis had goals in Oakville's other two wins, while Andrew Barsalona chipped in with three helpers. Gregory Brooks recorded the shutout against Rochester, and shared the shutout with Peter Michalski versus Pittsgrove. Other members of the Blue Stars are David Slattery, Theo Koolen, Nicholas Agam, Mitch Houlahan and Victor Jiminez. NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS: After watching the Oakville Edge high performance pre-juvenile team (above) take the ice, a few dads tried their hand at synchronized skating Sunday at River Oaks Recreation Centre. The dads' team, titled the Oakville Edgeless, was one of the big hits at the Oakville Edge 2007 Gala of Synchronized Skating. The gala, which had afternoon and evening shows, also featured the Edge Intro-toSkate participants, the pre-novice team, the FUSION's senior and adult teams, the Nexxice adult, junior and senior teams, Leaside's festival and competitive novice teams, Burlington's junior festival squad, and East Gwillimbury's novice and junior teams.
