www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 30, 2007 - 13 Logistics company sharing Vision Green program with carriers Continued from page 7 "Our green team members continued to brainstorm and that resulted in having Local Cooling software added to our computers to have them shut down more frequently and in new ways to trace shipments, which eliminated our need to photocopy mountains of paper," said Susan. "We instituted an anti-idling policy and we installed a large bulletin board in our kitchen that contains articles on the environment. Our latest change was to purchase the Prius to replace our current carrier rela- tions vehicle. That Prius takes four tonnes of carbon off our footprint." All these initiatives have gone a long way with Lakeside Logistics reporting an annual decrease of 320 tonnes of carbon per year, the equivalent of taking 64 cars off the road. Despite all this work Lakeside Logistics noted that it has not been able to reduce its emissions to zero, but instead of accepting defeat in this area, the company is attempting to counter balance these emissions through involvement in a British Columbia reforesting project. With Lakeside Logistics walking the green line, the company is now instituting phase two of its environmental plan, which is known as the Carrier Program "This is where we can have the largest impact because it presents us with an opportunity to target emissions at the source. Currently we deal with about 3,500 carriers throughout Canada and the U.S. Last fiscal year our carrier partners were responsible for emitting 35,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide on loads that are hauled for Lakeside customers," said Susan. "We have pledged to work with each of these carriers, sharing our Vision Green program and helping them audit their carbon footprint." As if this were not enough Lakeside Logistics is bringing its Vision Green program to its customers with whom the company intends to work towards measuring the carbon footprint of their supply chain. The announcement of what Lakeside Logistics has done, and is doing, for the environment was well received by those present, many of whom expressed a hope that this is not an isolated incident. "This is a terrific example of local business taking a leadership role that will have a huge impact beyond the local business," said Liz Bennian, leader of the local environmental group Oakvillegreen. "It will have an amazing impact on their employees, their families, the community and their business partners," said Bennian, adding, "Literally a worldwide example of what people can and should be doing in terms of combating global warming," she said.
