www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 30, 2007 - 31 Students catch a glimpse of Ryerson's programs By Samantha Baglione ABBEY PARK HIGH SCHOOL long with straining over university applications and reaching scholarship and midterm deadlines on time, it's no wonder students are having a hard time standing up let alone trying not to snap under the weight. Flattened with pressure, they have subsequently become the definition of stress. On Thursday, Nov. 8, Ryerson University decided to ease some of the stress by welcoming students on to its campus, providing them with tours, professors to consult with and in-depth, hands-on views of various academic programs offered. Groups of teens flooded into the streets of Toronto at 10 a.m., where the tour began in the busy metropolitan air as we learned about the campus and residence life, and the diversity within it. With a student body that hails from 99 different countries, Ryerson has more than 25 cultural associations, as well as events held throughout the year, that celebrate the ethnicity and customs found in the community. Although Ryerson's ini- A mimicking the same characteristics as college, with smaller classrooms and fewer lectures, providing students with a better connection toward professors and colleagues. There was also a vast athletic section involved with Ryerson's Recreation and Athletics Centre -- the "RAC" -- which included an innovative underground facility that housed a large supervised fitness centre, a cardio room, four internatial purpose was to be an institute of technology, it quickly became known as one of the top schools for arts and entertainment. The tour brought us to a variety of academic buildings, labs and classrooms including the famous $25million Rogers Communication Centre, which is a state-of-the-art facility for the school of journalism. We were then led to radio and television studios, the famous Ryerson theatre, which has withstood 60 years of fashion, and various learning centres. With 40 career-focused undergraduate programs, the main aspect that made this school stand out was the fact that it is centered around hands-on studies, tional squash courts, an indoor running track, a pool, and much more. Students were informed of portfolio details, which are required for the more competitive programs, as well as where student services are located and where extra-curricular clubs and groups meet. After the lecture we embarked on personal tours of our own areas of interest. I was once again surprised to see how little it felt like touring a school and how much it felt like watching real professions. I took interest in the Rogers Communication Centre where we saw studio rooms holding live interviews, newsrooms, editing rooms with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, printing rooms, etc. There was even an Apple room in which students could become familiar with Apple software and computer programs. Along with being a stop away from the Eaton Centre, Ryerson is perfect for easy commuting, finding action, broadcasting events and getting inspiration from the artistic vibe of the trendy city. This inside scoop alleviated some unwanted pressure since Ryerson has a program suitable for every interest, each preparing you for the real world by helping you gain experience and make your name.
